The word "perfume" itself originates from the Latin word 'per fumum'-not parfum as you may have figured. The idea of perfume itself can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. Other origins are with the Romans, Persians and the Indians. The Indians had a unique way of making perfume by burning incense.
The first person credited with 'discovering' perfume was a Mesopotamian woman name Tapputi. From there it passed across nations until it reached Europe, where it was introduced to what we would consider 'modern perfume' nowadays.
It was taught to the Europeans by the Hungarians and, as it does now, contains essential oils and alcohol solution. The Europeans then called it 'Hungary Water' and it was first bottled in the late 1300's. Once France learned of the bottled scent, they pounced on the new discovery and it was two French people, Catherine de' Medici and Rene le Florentin, that produced the first official and commercial form of perfume in the 16th century.
This was during the Renaissance period and perfume was only worn by the wealthy and elite of society as it could not be afforded by a peasant. So, these two perfume producers went about their work secretly via an underground passageway.
Soon after, other European nations along with the French started to grow their own raw materials, such as aromatic flowers and plants, to help feed the sudden increasing demand for perfume. Aromatherapy and perfume composition alike use natural scents from flowers and plants to produce different emotions from those using them.
These scents are set to be powerful enough to cause people to feel a certain way about themselves-mainly young and attractive. Some scents are considered more motivating or attracting and some are more for calm and relaxation. Some are simply to cause a reaction in the crowd. You could say that perfume is magic, bottled.
